Despite not having been an Olympic sport since 1900, cricket was included in the opening ceremony at the 2012 Games in London. Put together by award-winning film director Danny Boyle – famed for Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting – a game of village cricket featured in the opening moments of the extravaganza that highlighted things quintessentially British.

The 1900 Olympics at Paris is the only Games to include cricket which saw Great Britain win a gold medal against the host nation in a 12-a-side two-day match at the Vélodrome de Vincennes. The Netherlands and Belgium were touted as possible participants in the event, but pulled out leaving the Devon and Somerset Wanderers club, representing Britain, and the French Athletic Club, mostly British expatriates living in Paris, representing France. The England side included two players with first-class experience – Somerset’s Alfred Bowerman and Montagu Toller.

Another first-class cricketer appeared at the Paris Olympics. Claude Buckenham, a fast bowler who played for Essex from 1899 to 1914, was a member of the Upton Park football team that won the inaugural Olympic football tournament at the 1900 Games. He then played in four Tests against South Africa in 1909/10, taking 21 wickets at 28.23.
